Wicknell Chivayo has spent about US$34 million on a long-range Gulfstream G550 private jet, adding to his reputation for flashy displays of wealth.
Chivayo, 45, who reportedly made his fortune through lucrative state-linked contracts, revealed the purchase on social media, including the aircraft’s high price.
Flight tracking site FlightAware lists the jet, with tail number N550GA, as previously owned by Gulfstream Leasing, a US company. The aircraft first entered service in 2012.
The Gulfstream G550, powered by twin Rolls-Royce BR700 engines, can fly about 12,500 kilometres without stopping, carry 14 to 19 passengers, cruise at up to 41,000 feet, and reach speeds of 941 km/h.
Although Chivayo has completed payment, aviation sources say the jet will undergo interior customisation and possibly be repainted before its expected delivery in March.
Chivayo, a close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has spent the past year travelling in a Bombardier Challenger 300.
It is not yet clear what will happen to that aircraft once the Gulfstream enters service.
