THE. government has awarded civil servants a US$75 non-taxable Covid-19 monthly allowance in addition to a salary hike of 50 per cent which will also be applied to pensions.
The development was confirmed by the Ministry of Finance in a statement Wednesday evening, with the fiscal authority adding that government pensioners would also get a Covid-19 monthly allowance of US$30.
The ministry said the pay increase was in line with government’s commitment to continuously improve the conditions of service for its workers in line with the “transitory economic challenges being experienced in the country” and have been worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This interim arrangement is for a period of three months, starting from June 2020,” reads the Ministry’s statement.
“Government reiterates its commitment to payment of a living wage to its employees, whilst ensuring sustainability of the budget.
“Government is also widening the remuneration framework for civil servants to introduce non-monetary benefits and these will be announced in due course.”
