COVID-19 Rocks Mutimurefu Prison, 78 People Test Positive For The Virus

Africa-PressZimbabwe. The infamous coronavirus has rocked Zimbabwe’s largest penitentiary as 78 people reportedly tested positive for the virus, The Herald reports.

Inmates and officials reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 at Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo and the inmates have already been isolated at the prison.

This was revealed by Provincial Covid-19 taskforce spokesperson Mr. Rodgers Irimai who told the publication that:

Routine tests for Covid-19 were conducted at Mutimurefu Prison and 78 inmates came out positive and they were immediately put in self-isolation.

We continue to closely monitor the situation at Mutimurefu but authorities at the institution have assured us that they have sufficient space and scope to isolate those infected.

This comes amid reports from experts that the COVID-19 pandemic will get worse before it gets better. Zimbabwe since the turn of the new year has recorded over 600 COVID-19 deaths as the beleaguered Southern African struggles to contain the virus’ second wave.
