Fresh Details Emerge On Fatal Shooting Of Detectives In Zaka

New details have emerged from court proceedings regarding the shooting of two members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Homicide division from Harare in Zaka last Sunday, reported TellZim News.

The suspect, Daniel Munyanyi, who was later apprehended by members of the public in Nyika, Bikita, a day after the shooting, appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzi on Friday for his initial court appearance and was remanded until later this month.

The court heard that the detectives had travelled from Harare to Ndume Village in Zaka on 28 February to follow up on armed robbery cases and were tracking down Munyanyi when the shooting occurred in the early hours of 1 March.

The team reportedly approached the homestead as part of their investigation and fired three warning shots into the air before entering the house.

Inside the dining room, the detectives introduced themselves, and it was at that point that Munyanyi allegedly emerged from a bedroom armed with a firearm and opened fire.

He allegedly fired three shots at Detective Constable BernardChimbeke and one shot at Detective Constable Casper Antonio McKenzie Chitsowe before fleeing the scene.

Detective Chimbeke died on the spot, while Detective Chitsowe was critically injured. Despite his injuries, Chitsowe attempted to pursue Munyanyi but later succumbed to his wounds.

Three other detectives were also wounded during the incident, with one officer later losing a leg after it was amputated in hospital.

Munyanyi fled the scene but was later apprehended by members of the public in Bikita on 2 March.

He also appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Innocent Bepura, facing six counts of armed robbery.

He received a combined sentence of 72 years, with 10 years conditionally suspended. Munyanyi will serve an effective 62 years for the six counts in Masvingo and is yet to answer the murder charges.
