Govt Gives War Veterans 8 Farms, Mines & A Conservancy For Tourism

Defence Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, has said that the government has reserved eight farms, mines and a conservancy for tourism for the War Veterans.

The development, as the minister noted, is a way to restore the dignity of the fighters in the liberation war.

Muchinguri-Kashiri said:

In the old dispensation, we were humiliated treated like we did not matter but we are glad that we came together and restored our legacy. The new dispensation is now there to restore the dignity of war veterans. We want to thank the President for giving us a department that will look into the affairs of the war veterans. At the moment we have 8 farms meant for projects, we were also given mines and we also have a conservancy for tourism.

Her remarks come a few weeks after war veterans had said that they were tired of waiting for empty promises the government made since on the aftermath of independence in 1980.

They were demanding an increase in their gratuities and the quickening of the vetting process to make sure all war veterans were receiving the gratuity.

In some quarters of society, war veterans are viewed as an appendix to the ruling party which uses them wherever and whenever necessary to gain political mileage. War veterans played an essential role in the demise of former president Robert Mugabe in 2017.
