Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWEANS should support local industry and products due to their critical role in driving the country’s economic growth, a Cabinet minister has said.
Speaking at the ZimBrands Awards ceremony recently, Industry and Commerce minister Nqobizitha Ndlovu said the future of Zimbabwe’s economy lay in the hands of its people, through innovation, ingenuity, and entrepreneurship.
He said the ZimBrands Awards, rebranded under the Buy Zimbabwe Campaign, were a call to action and a reminder that the future of the economy and the well-being of citizens were in their hands.
Ndlovu commended local producers for their resilience and contribution to economic growth, noting that their efforts have reinforced the commitment to building a self-sustaining, robust economy.
“This initiative fosters the localisation of value chains, which not only grow our economy but also ensures we retain jobs locally. Your success as ZimBrands is a testament to the power of Zimbabwean ingenuity, determination and resilience,” he said.
The recent liberalisation of the exchange rate has provided much-needed relief for retailers and wholesalers, helping them to navigate previous pricing challenges caused by disparities in exchange rates.
“There is an urgent need for a mindset shift among our people. Imported goods are not necessarily superior to locally-produced ones,” Ndlovu said.
“The government remains committed to addressing the concerns of local producers, particularly in combating smuggling and counterfeit products that compromise the integrity of our market. We will work tirelessly to ensure a fair and supportive environment for local businesses.”
He proposed the strengthening of anti-smuggling programmes, highlighting their importance in protecting domestic producers from unfair competition.
“This initiative is crucial. By enhancing surveillance and collaborating with law enforcement, we will deter smuggling activities that continue to undermine our economy,” Ndlovu said.
“Let us work together to build a prosperous Zimbabwe, where local products are celebrated and our industry is resilient and thriving,” he said.
