RENOVATIONS at Gweru General Hospital’s COVID-19 isolation wing are at an advanced stage with ventilators procured by a local mining company already in the country and ready for installation.
The renovations are being carried out for the isolation centre to meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards for admitting COVID-19 patients after Unki Mine donated 10 million rand towards the facelift of the facility.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Senator Larry Mavhima says government is happy with the progress at the institution which he said are being carried out in record time.
Said Senator Mavhima; “I am sure you will agree with me that the team of engineers are doing a wonderful job at this institution.
“What we saw is testimony that together we can achieve greatness. I’m also happy to confirm that the ventilators to be installed are already in the country.”
Meanwhile, Unki Mine has donated foodstuffs for the vulnerable at the institution to cover the next three months, with General Manager Mr Walter Nemasase saying it is time for business to partner government to fight the pandemic.
“What we are doing is part of our social responsibility,” he said.
“We are saying the nurses and doctors play a pivotal role during this difficult time. They need motivation as they go about their business and we as an institution operating in the country we have seen it fit to help with the little we have.”
Meanwhile another mining giant operating in the province, Mimosa has chipped in to assist in the renovation of the Infectious Disease Hospital which will be used as a screening centre.
