Police suspect an inside job in Wednesday’s Mukuru robbery in Bulawayo, after gunmen reportedly targeted a female employee who had the keys, disabled the alarms, and accessed CCTV footage.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the robbers made off with more than US$78,000 and over half a million rand from a safe.
The heist took place just after 7 am at the Mukuru branch on Jason Moyo Street, between 8th and 9th Avenue, in the city centre.
Speaking to ZBC, Commissioner Nyathi said, “It’s clear that these suspects had inside information.” He said:
“It’s clear that these suspects had inside information. These criminals had received information from someone, possibly within the financial services sector, specifically at the outlet, because the manner and form in which this robbery occurred clearly shows that these guys had been alerted.
“Because just imagine, they targeted an employee who had access, who had keys to the complex, and then they started, you know, attacking her, forcing her to open offices.
“Meaning to say, everything had been pre-planned. But I want to assure you, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is conducting comprehensive investigations, and very soon we’ll be able to get to the bottom of what actually transpired.
“But obviously, the issue of leakage of information is taking centre stage.”
