The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has confirmed that only former Harare South MP Shadreck Mashayamombe and Harare Deputy Mayor Rosemary Muronda have been arrested.
Earlier reports that Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume was also in custody were incorrect.
ZACC Commissioner Kindness Paradza told The Herald on Wednesday that Councillor Mafume has not been arrested, but was invited for questioning as investigations continue. He said:
“We arrested Mashayamombe, but as for the Mayor, we invited him for questioning. This means the mayor at this stage is not under arrest. Having said that, investigations are currently in progress.
“Deputy Mayor Rosemary Muronda and Shadreck Mashayamombe are the two we arrested. As I said, the mayor was called in for questioning and was allowed to go home. He was not arrested.
“Mashayamombe is facing fraud charges, while the Harare Deputy Mayor faces criminal abuse of office. Two other senior council officials are still at large, but the net is closing in.”
In a statement on Wednesday evening, ZACC said Muronda and Mashayamombe were arrested over allegations of fraud related to the illegal sale of council land. The statement reads:
“The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) confirms the arrest of City of Harare Deputy Mayor, Councillor Rosemary Muronda and former Harare South Member of Parliament, Shadreck Mashayamombe, on allegations of fraud involving the fraudulent sale of Council land. The two are expected to appear in court soon.”
