JUST IN: MDC Alliance’s Job Sikhala Denied Bail

Africa-PressZimbabwe. Opposition MDC Alliance’s vice-chairperson, Job Sikhala, was Friday denied bail by Harare Magistrate Ngoni Nduna.

The Zengeza West legislator was arrested last Saturday “for peddling falsehoods” that a police officer struck to death a little baby with a baton in Harare.

Police allege the baby is still alive and was never beaten by the officer as alleged.

Sikhala has been in remand prison since then. Two other people, MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere and journalist Hopewell Chin’ono have also been arrested over the same charge that Sikhala is facing.

Ruling on Sikhala’s bail application, Magistrate Nduna said there was overwhelming evidence against him not to grant bail.

Sikhala’s lawyers argued that he was a good candidate for bail since he has never been convicted of any crime before despite being arrested 64 times for various offences over the years.

Magistrate Nduna, however, dismissed the argument saying Sikhala’s record makes him a serial criminal offender.

Nduna said Sikhala, who is also known as Wiwa, should wait for the commencement of trial while in prison custody.

Job Sikhala is expected back in court on February 18.
