A kombi driver caught overloading schoolchildren has been fined US$400 by Mbare Magistrates’ Court, with failure to pay set to result in four months in prison.

Kumbulani Tauzeni, 42, faced multiple charges, including operating without a valid defensive driving certificate, driving without a medical certificate issued by the General Medical Office (GMO), and carrying more passengers than his kombi was legally allowed.

He appeared in court on Monday and was found guilty on all counts.

For failing to possess the required defensive driving and medical certificates, Tauzeni was fined US$100 for each offence or would face 30 days in prison per charge.

On the charge of overloading his kombi, carrying 35 pupils and three teachers, he was fined US$200, or would serve an additional 60 days behind bars.

The driver was arrested while operating an unroadworthy public service vehicle along Amalinda Road, en route to a school in Glen Norah.

Tauzeni had been conducting the school run from Fidelity to Kudakwashe Primary School in Glen Norah B.
