Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Luis Enrique has excluded Thiago Alcantara, Sergio Ramos and David de Gea from Spain’s 26-man FIFA World Cup squad.
He refused to comment on the players he left out, but the absence of Ramos, de Gea and Thiago means Enrique is banking on the new generation of talent. He said:
Youth gives you freedom because you are not yet aware of the consequences. Yet, most of the youngsters that are with us are already in high-level teams. The bar that I’m setting is infinity. My goal is to compete in every game.
How can I doubt myself? I am the best coach on the face of the earth. If I have to convince my players I have to be convinced myself… There is no better coach than me. I know it is not true, but I believe it. Doubts? None!
Some of the youngsters in the team include Barcelona’s Ansu Fati (20) who is fighting his way back from four surgeries to recover from an injury sustained to his left knee in November 2020.
Spain will begin its campaign against Costa Rica on November 23 in a Group E match, followed by Germany (November 28) and Japan (December 2) in the group of death.
