National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Lovemore Madhuku has received death threats just days after being brutally assaulted by unknown assailants at his party’s offices on Sunday.
During the night, unknown individuals painted graffiti at the NCA offices, warning Madhuku to abandon his campaign against the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.
Speaking to NewsDay, NCA spokesperson Madock Chivasa said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government would be held responsible should anything happen to Madhuku. Said Chivasa:
“We are aware that the intimidation towards the NCA leader is meant to instil fear in the minds of Zimbabweans so that they do not oppose the draconian Amendment 3, which is being imposed on the people of Zimbabwe by enemies of democracy.
“We urge all Zimbabweans to speak with one voice and reject the unreasonable amendments meant to entrench ZANU-PF hegemony in Zimbabwe.”
Madhuku and 17 other NCA members were assaulted and hospitalised on Sunday while holding an internal meeting to strategise against the proposed constitutional amendments.
The attack came just a week after another incident in which two NCA members were allegedly abducted by unidentified men, tortured, and later dumped in Harare.
Despite the threats and violence, Madhuku has vowed to continue challenging the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.
