Makomborero Haruzivishe Facing A Possible Jail Sentence Of 20 Years

Africa-PressZimbabwe. MDC Alliance activist Makomborero Haruzivishe who was convicted on charges of resisting arrest and inciting public violence could be sentenced to 20 years in jail according to his lawyer Kossam Ncube, Zim Live reports.

Ncube was speaking to Voice Of America when he said each charge on which Haruzivishe was convicted carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Said Ncube to VOA:

The court has an option to impose a fine or sentence him to 10 years on each conviction or both fine and sentence.

Fadzayi Mahere the MDC Alliance spokesperson said the conviction of Haruzivishe marks a sad day for constitutional rights in Zimbabwe in a tweet that said:

The conviction of Makomborero marks a sad day for freedom and constitutional rights in Zimbabwe. He is innocent. It is not a crime to demand a better society. The regime has declared war on aspiration and young people. We need new leaders.

Makomborero was first arrested on kidnapping charges as law enforcement agents stated that he went into Impala Motor Spares and prohibited people at the premises to leave as he was demanding why they had gotten Takudzwa Ngadziore arrested.

He will be sentenced on Tuesday 6 April and his lawyer is expected to make litigation arguments before sentencing.
