Africa-PressZimbabwe. Zimbabwe recorded 47 COVID-19 deaths on the 14th of January 2021 pushing the Southern African country’s death toll to 636.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care reported in a statement that Mashonaland West recorded the highest number of deaths followed by Harare as shall be highlighted below.

Zimbabwe’s coronavirus cases and deaths spiked towards the end of the third quarter of 2020 prompting the government to reimpose stricter measures to curb the spread and transmission of the virus.

The country has recorded 25 368 cases since March last year when the first case was recorded.

Although the recovery rate is high, medical experts are concerned with the mortality rate and are warning against complacency.

In the past 24 hours, Harare recorded the highest number of new cases, 467, followed by Manicaland which has 183 cases.

Some attribute the recent surge in coronavirus cases and fatalities to the reopening of the country’s borders, especially the Beitbridge Border which Zimbabwe shares with South Africa.

South Africa has the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths on the African continent and has also detected a new, unique and aggressive coronavirus strain.
