Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The MDC Alliance on Tuesday blasted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government for its alleged penchant to commit crimes against citizens and violation of human rights with impunity.
In a statement, MDC Alliance Secretary for Welfare, Maureen Kademaunga, named several opposition activists that the party believes have been punished for exercising their rights by the Mnangagwa administration through the abuse of the judiciary.
Among them are Makomborero Haruzivishe, Cecelia Chimbiri and Joana Mamombe who are currently imprisoned since March 2021 as well as Tinashe Bwanaisa, Rakeshi Marufu, Collin Paison, Tafara Mafunde, Farai Chidziva and Trust Nyamado who are serving five-year jail terms for participating in a protest in January 2019. Said Kademaunga:
The regime disregards the fact that the liberty of the person is sacrosanct and international and national law dictates that justice must be expedited.
Detention is being implemented as punishment when as yet the accused persons are presumed innocent.
In some instances, the High Court and the Magistrates Court differ greatly in their approach in such matter of bail as to even put in doubt the true and correct positions of the law.
Kademaunga further called for the United Nations to launch an urgent, thorough, impartial and effective investigation into the abduction and torture of Cecilia Chimbiri, Joana Mamombe and Netsai Marova.
The MDC Alliance trio was allegedly abducted by State agents in 2020 and subjected to torture and abuse over a two-day period.
