Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The MDC Alliance (MDC-A)said it is working on renewing the fixed-term contracts of 105 workers that expired in December 2020.
MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere confirmed the development saying the workers’ contracts expired on 31 December 2020 and the administrative department is working on renewals. She said:
Our staff were on annual contracts which expired on December 31, 2020.
The administrative department is currently in the process of working on renewals.
A letter written by acting secretary-general David Chimhini reveals that the party was facing financial challenges as it owes its workers outstanding salaries. Chimhini wrote:
This letter serves to inform you that your fixed term contract of employment shall be expiring on December 31, 2020.
All the outstanding salaries that are due to you shall be paid into your normal bank account in due course.
The office will communicate with you once the funds are available.
Pending the renewal of their contracts, the workers were ordered to return all the party’s materials, documents or equipment which were in their custody during the period of their contracts of employment.
The MDC-A has been facing financial challenges since the Ministries of Justice and Finance started channelling funds meant for the party under the Political Parties Finance Act to the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T despite a court order to the contrary.
