Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. IT was all joy when more than 50 municipal workers, who are members of the Combined Municipal Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CMWUZ), were allocated residential stands in Norton at the weekend.
The beneficiaries are part of several hundreds of municipal workers who are set to be allocated residential stands.
CMWUZ launched its housing pay scheme in Norton recently before allocating residential stands in the first phase of the project.
The union secured several stands from private land developer Beyond Reality Cooperative for its members.
In an interview with NewsDay, CMWUZ chairperson Shadrack Chikore said the union was moving towards the second phase of allocation.
“We are happy that we have fulfilled what we had promised our members and this has happened timeously,” Chikore said.
“Today we allocated residential stands to about 52 members, who have paid 40% for their stands as per agreement with the land owner.
“We are confident that we are going to allocate more stands to more members in two weeks’ time. We are happy that all is going well in ensuring that municipal workers get decent accommodation.”
CMWUZ was formed in 2023 with the objectives of protecting municipal workers’ rights and improving their welfare.
The union comprises municipal workers drawn from several local authorities across the country.
“Our target is to ensure that at least 300 members get residential stands before year-end. The good thing is that those who have paid 40% for the residential stands can begin constructing structures,” Chikore said.
The residential stands measure from 200m2 to 2 000m2.
