Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The president of the opposition MDC-T, Mr Douglas Mwonzora, is one of the Senators who rejected the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 2 that sailed through this Tuesday.
There was a total of ten senators, including Mwonzora, who rejected the Constitutional Amendment bill. These are:
Female senators from the MDC-T, however, voted for the bill and the party argued that this was mainly because of the bill’s intention to foster gender equality in the country.
ZimLive, claim that some of Mwonzora’s lieutenants revealed to them that the voting pattern was MDC-T’s strategy to deceive members of the public into believing that the party did not like Constitutional amendments.
Although Mwonzora rejected the Constitutional Amendment Bill, it is alleged that he whipped the party’s female senators to vote for the bill.
The Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 2 has come under scrutiny and criticism for its intentions to remove the running mate clause and to give the president the powers to make key appointments in the judiciary.
Legal minds in the country and yonder argue that the bill is tantamount to the reversal of democratic principles the Southern African country has been entrenching since independence.
