Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A senior official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care says they are on high alert following cases of cholera in Malawi and other countries in the southern African region.

Speaking with Health Times on Friday, Health and Child Care Deputy Minister John Mangwiro urged Zimbabweans to continue safe hygiene and sanitation practices. He said:

In Zimbabwe there are no cases of cholera but we know Malawi has got cases. We are on the lookout for cholera and all the preventative measures have been taken.

We are rushing to the Director of Public Health Dr (Munyaradzi) Dobbie. He was telling us he is on a cleanup mission for the towns.

In 2008, Zimbabwe was hit by a severe cholera outbreak that mainly affected Glen View and Budiriro high density suburbs in the capital Harare.

Malawi is currently the hardest hit with close to 1 300 deaths.

Other regional countries such as Zambia, and South Africa have reportedly been recording some cholera cases.
