Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Top ZANU PF politician Obert Mpofu is reportedly refusing to step down as Secretary-General after party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa announced on Tuesday that President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the ZANU PF First Secretary, had reassigned Mpofu to the less influential portfolio of Secretary for Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
In his statement, Mutsvangwa said Jacob Mudenda had replaced Mpofu as Secretary-General, while Patrick Chinamasa took over Mudenda’s former role. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi was redeployed as Secretary for Legal Affairs.
Prior to the reshuffle, Mudenda served as Treasurer-General, Chinamasa as Secretary for Legal Affairs, and Ziyambi as ICT Secretary.
Complications have arisen after two identical documents surfaced, both dated 25 September 2025, concerning the conferment of Liberation Hero status on John Gowa.
One document bore Mpofu’s signature as Secretary-General, while the other was signed by Mudenda in the same capacity.
Both letters were addressed to Martin Rushwaya, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet.
Notably, Mpofu’s letter was officially stamped, whereas Mudenda’s letter lacked a stamp, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the reshuffle. The letter reads in part:
“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU (PF), Cde E.D. Mnangagwa has conferred a Liberation Hero status to the late Cde John Gowa who died on 23rd September 2025.
“He will be buried at Karikoga Village under Chief Dotito in Mt Darwin. The family can be contacted through our Mashonaland Central Provincial Offices.”
“I shall be most grateful if you would make the usual arrangements for payment of benefits to his family. He is from Mashonaland Central Province.”
