Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) deputy spokesperson Gift “Ostallos” Siziba has condemned the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) for suspending six student activists affiliated with the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), describing the move as a “blatant affront to academic freedom.”

Siziba accused the institution of descending into partisan dysfunction and administrative decay, alleging that it now operates as an extension of ZANU PF’s authoritarian machinery. He said:

The regime has transformed this once revered institution into a caricature of ineptitude, characterized by systemic collapse and an unmistakable extension of ZANU PF’s authoritarian grip.

The six suspended students, Narshon Kohlo, Blessing Mtisi, Nodesha Maingehama, Tafadzwa Katsande, Tawananyasha Hove, and Tariro Mtukura, were allegedly targeted for engaging in civic activism and expressing solidarity with striking lecturers at the University of Zimbabwe.

Siziba accused the university administration of breaching Sections 58, 59, 61, and 69 of the 2013 Constitution, which safeguard the rights to freedom of expression, association, and a fair hearing.

He also criticised what he termed the “unchecked powers” of the Vice Chancellor, describing the disciplinary measures as arbitrary, politically driven, and reflective of broader authoritarian tendencies. Said Siziba:

These actions are a stark example of injustice. The Constitution unequivocally guarantees the freedom to research, assemble, and express oneself.

Siziba called for the immediate reinstatement of all six students and voiced strong support for the broader ZINASU movement, which has condemned the escalating repression within the country’s tertiary institutions. He said:

We owe it to the student union to join the fight. Their struggle is our struggle.
