Police Name Eight Roman Catholic Congregants Killed In Hwange Kombi Accident

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of eight people who died in a road traffic accident at Deka Bridge on Deka Road in Hwange on 23 May 2026.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 24 May, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the victims had been formally identified by their next of kin.

The victims have been identified as follows:

TIZANI MBOZI (51), a male adult of Victoria Falls.

NYONI GETRUDE (62), a female adult of Victoria Falls.

MASUKU JANE (72), a female adult of Victoria Falls.

MWALE TELIA (52), a female adult of Victoria Falls.

FUNGAI SHUMBA (40), a female adult of Victoria Falls.

MANDINYENYA NGONIDZASHE (37), a female adult of Victoria Falls.

THOMAS MUZAMBA (46), a male adult of Chinotimba, Victoria Falls.

KEILA NDUBA, a female juvenile aged four years of Mkhosana, Victoria Falls.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We urge motorists to exercise caution and prioritise road safety at all times when using the country’s roads,” added Commissioner Nyathi.

In a brief statement on Saturday, the ZRP said all of the victims were members of the Roman Catholic Church.

The accident occurred at around 7 am along Deka Road, when a commuter omnibus (kombi) carrying 13 congregants plunged off Deka Bridge. The group was reportedly returning home from a night prayer service.
