A Kwekwe-based self-styled prophet, Simabvu Shiri (37), was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife, Trishia Samantha Maphosa (28). She later went into premature labour and gave birth to a baby who died just a few hours later.
Shiri is the founder of Spring of Living Waters Church, which is headquartered in Kwekwe.
The alleged assault took place last Sunday. Police arrested Shiri on Thursday at his home in Mbizo 4, Kwekwe.
He appeared in court on Friday for his initial remand, and his trial is set to begin next Wednesday.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest to Masvingo Mirror. He said:
“It is alleged that Shiri’s eight-month pregnant wife, Trishia Samantha Maphosa, made a Police report that she was physically assaulted by her husband, who also threatened to kill her and her unborn baby.
“The complainant was admitted to a local hospital on Wednesday last week, and she had a pre-term birth. The baby died the following day.”
Shiri has a history of violence. In 2024, he was sentenced to 12 months in jail for assaulting members of his church.
