Public Service Ministry Condemns Murder Of Six-Year-Old Girl In Zvishavane

The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare has condemned the brutal assault of a six-year-old girl by her uncle, which led to her death in Zvishavane on Sunday.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said Takudzwa Wellington Chimutsa (28) fatally attacked his niece because she was unable to write her name.

In a statement, Permanent Secretary Simon Masanga said that nothing can ever justify using physical abuse as a form of discipline. The statement reads:

“The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare expresses deep sorrow and shock over the death of a six-year-old girl who was beaten to death for failing to spell her name.

“We extend our condolences to the family and community affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.

“We strongly condemn such acts of violence against children. No circumstance can ever justify the use of physical abuse as a form of discipline.

“This heartbreaking case is a stark reminder that children deserve love, patience and protection, not punishment that endangers their lives.

“As a Ministry, we call upon all parents, guardians and caregivers to embrace positive parenting practices.

“Children thrive when they are nurtured with encouragement, guidance and respect. Discipline must be constructive and never harmful.

“We urge families to seek support, use non-violent methods of teaching and create safe environments where children can grow with dignity, confidence and love.

“Safeguarding children is a collective responsibility. The tragic loss of a child through violence is abhorrent, and we must ensure that no child ever suffers in this way again.

“We urge all community members to report any incident of violence against children immediately to the nearest police station or social welfare office. Silence only enables abuse, speaking out saves lives.

“Together, we can raise awareness, prevent abuse and guarantee that every child is valued, protected and given the chance to thrive.

“The Ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing child rights and protection.

“We will continue to strengthen advocacy, broaden access to education and reinforce support systems to prevent tragedies and foster a society where every child can freely express themselves, with their talents and abilities respected.

“We affirm that no amount of force or abuse can alter the natural abilities of a child, only encouragement and support can nurture their full potential.”
