Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE has recorded a 20% increase in road traffic accidents during the second quarter of 2025, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has said, amid calls by experts for motorists to exercise caution on the country’s roads.

In the second quarter of the year, Zimbabwe recorded 15 350 road traffic accidents, of which 492 were fatal.

In the previous quarter, there were12 808 road traffic accidents, of which 378 were fatal.

ZimStat’s services statistics manager Kureva Mukoki said the 15 350 road traffic accidents led to 2 926 injuries.

“Road traffic accidents increased by 19,8% during 2nd quarter (of) 2025 as compared to 1st quarter of 2025. Of the 15 350 accidents reported in 2nd quarter of 2025, 492 were fatal. Quarter-on-quarter comparison shows a 30,2% increase in fatal accidents, from 378 reported in 1st quarter of 2025,” read the report.

During the period under review, ZimStat also noted an increase of 15,2% in the number of vehicles registered for the first time to 21 128 from 18 214.

“The number of light motor vehicles registered for the first time increased by 18,1% from 13 631 recorded during the first quarter to 16 095,” Mukoki said.

ZimStat said of the 54 453 candidates who underwent certificate of competence test during 2nd quarter 52,9% succeeded.

“Proportions of candidates who passed the certificate of competence test during 2nd quarter of 2025 were less than 50% in all provinces except Mash East, Harare and Manicaland which recorded 67,6%, 66,3% and 50,1%, respectively,” the report said.
