Sanyati Villagers Warned To Stay Alert As Buffaloes Roam Free

A herd of buffalo seen in Manyange Village on Wednesday evening has prompted emergency warnings for residents in Nyimo and surrounding areas.

The Sanyati Rural Residents Association (SRRA) said the animals escaped from Nyabango Game Park, about 20 kilometres from nearby communities, and are moving towards populated areas.

Buffaloes are regarded as one of Africa’s most dangerous animals and are linked to many wildlife-related deaths each year.

SRRA secretary-general Enias Chinhengo said the incident is not a one-off but reflects a long-standing problem.

“Nyabango Game Park is about 20 kilometres from the Sanyati rural community. It has no perimeter fence and is home to wild animals such as elephants, buffalo, and hyenas,” said Chinhengo.

“It takes less than an hour for them to reach nearby villages. Over the years, elephants have continued to use their traditional migration routes through the community and have become a menace.

He said the park lies within a large area of state land that runs from Sanyati to Kariba, where wildlife often crosses. Rangers patrol the area regularly to manage the ecosystem.

Chinhengo said rangers usually track stray animals and return them to the sanctuary. But swift action is vital when dangerous wildlife moves into residential areas.

Residents of Manyange, Nyimo and nearby villages have been urged to stay alert, avoid bush paths, secure livestock and report any sightings at once to game rangers, local authorities or the police.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson Luckmore Safuli confirmed the incident.

“ZimParks has received reports regarding a group of stray buffaloes spotted in the Sanyati area,” said Safuli.

“This situation is being closely monitored, as stray wildlife can pose risks to both the animals and local communities.”

Safuli urged the public to take extra care in the affected area. He said residents should not travel alone, especially at night, and should keep away from bushy areas where visibility is poor.
