Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A VIDEO went viral last week, where sports minister Anselem Sanyatwe was filmed having discussions with contractors over National Sports Stadium renovations.
In the video, Sanyatwe is seen demanding answers over the snail’s pace at which the work at the stadium is progressing.
He demanded to know the whereabouts of the generators that are supposed to be on site and why certain things had not been done.
Sanyatwe, who was recently appointed Sports minister after Kirsty Coventry left the post for a bigger role at the International Olympic Committee, demanded that the pace be ramped up.
Also last week, following the accident involving golfers where one lost his life, Sanyatwe visited the injured in hospital.
Two foreign nationals from Ghana and Malawi were hospitalised at a private facility following the car crash.
After learning of the accident, the minister visited the hospitalised duo the following morning.
On Monday, Sanyatwe attended the burial of popular karate and fitness trainer Sensei Mugove Muhambe, who died in a car accident in Harare.
The little time that Sanyatwe has been in office has shown us that we have a Sports minister who is hands-on and involves himself in the activities of his portfolio.
This is quite encouraging and we urge the minister to keep up that work ethic and attitude.
It may be too early to say whether he will be a good minister, but the signs are quite encouraging.
The National Sports Stadium project will require much of his attention and after years of merry-go-round and missed targets. Surely, the renovations must be completed this year. Zimbabwe’s senior men’s national football team plays South Africa and Rwanda in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
The Warriors played all their home games in Rwanda, Uganda or South Africa.
They played all their home Africa Cup of Nations matches in South Africa and Uganda on their way to qualification for the 2025 finals.
But that’s not to say they were not disadvantaged.
Most of the major works have been completed at the National Sports Stadium.
With the installation of bucket seats complete, the contractors are now focusing on water reticulation as well as laying of a new pitch and sorting out drainage.
Over the last few weeks, things have moved a little bit faster which points to targets being met for the stadium to be ready by September.
It is good to see that the minister is hands-on and is a man of action.
It is a breath of fresh air. It is such work ethic that we expect from all government officials.
