Former South African Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has urged South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to ask President Mnangagwa to release Hopewell Chin’ono who was arrested on charges of inciting public violence and denied bail by a Harare Magistrate on Friday.
Madonsela appealed to Ramaphosa in his capacity as the current SADC chairperson and said:
Dear @_AfricanUnion Chairperson, President @CyrilRamaphosa, please ask President @edmnangagwa to release anti-corruption journalist #FreeHopewell Chin’ono
The international community has implored the government to released Chin’ono citing that his arrest borders on infringing on human rights but the government has responded and said Chino’no was arrested on charges of using his social media accounts to incite Zimbabweans to violently overthrow the Government.
