Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has announced that certain inmates will soon be allowed conjugal visits while serving their sentences.
The first to benefit will be those who have shown exemplary behaviour and adapted well to correctional measures.
At Marondera Female Open Prison and Connemara Prison, selected inmates have already begun receiving conjugal visits during the holiday season.
With Unity Day approaching, several inmates will be temporarily released to celebrate before returning to their facilities after the New Year.
Speaking to female inmates recently, ZPCS Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu also revealed plans to introduce a parole system that will benefit all female inmates at the open prison. He said:
“We are in the process of implementing the parole system. Once operational, this system will allow some inmates to complete their sentences in the comfort of their homes.”
Comm-Gen Chihobvu said that experts from the Parole Board will carefully choose which inmates can take part in the programme, focusing on those who have done well in rehabilitation efforts.
On Monday, the ZPCS opened the prison gates so inmates could spend time with their families until Sunday, helping them reintegrate into society.
