Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has effectively dissolved the leadership of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU), suspending the remaining members of its National Executive Board and National Executive Committee from all forms of rugby administration and activities in the country.

In a Press statement issued yesterday, the SRC stated the decision was made in terms of section 30(1)(b) and (c)(i) as read with section 19(a), (b) and (c), and paragraph 23 of the second schedule of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act [Chapter 25:15].

The SRC emphasised that the suspension, which follows a resolution passed by its Board of Commissioners on September 9, 2025, shall remain effective until the next ZRU elections.

The SRC’s action comes after what it describes as a failure by the ZRU to adhere to its legal obligations.

The statement highlighted a key reason for the suspension: “The Zimbabwe Rugby Union is a registered national association in terms of section 29(4) of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act. As a registered national association, the ZRU has failed to conform to section 29(8)(b) of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act.”

The commission detailed the sequence of events that led to the suspension.

“The SRC issued a show cause order on September 4, 2025, which resulted in the resignation of eight members of the ZRU national executive board,” the press statement read.

It continued: “No representations were filed by the remaining members of the ZRU national executive board, hence the SRC invoked section 30 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act.”

The SRC concluded its statement by assuring stakeholders that it would provide further guidance on the future of the sport.

Challenges bedevilling the local game have been simmering over a number of years and escalated following the 15s rugby team’s qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in July.
