Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ST JOHN Ambulance Zimbabwe is gearing up for 100 years’ celebration in July, with regional and national first aid quiz and scenario competitions forming part of a cocktail of activities that are pencilled for the year.
Harare primary and secondary school competed in the exciting first aid quiz and practical scenario competitions at Prince Edward School.
In the quiz competitions, teams from participating schools showcased their knowledge of various medical conditions and how to manage them through first aid, while in the scenario competitions they practically manage emergency trauma situations simulating real life emergencies.
Glen View 4 Primary School etched its name on the prestigious trophy in the junior schools’ competition as it claimed first overall position, brushing aside the challenge from other participants.
Other schools which participated included last year’s champions Nettleton Primary, Tynwald Primary, Alfred Beit Primary, Happy Primary and Blessed Friends Primary School.
Glen View 4 Primary were level with Nettleton Primary School for the Best in Quiz Segment, while Tynwald claimed the Best in Scenarios trophy.
In the senior schools’ category, Chisipite continued to dominate the tightly contested trophy — beating contenders Arundel Girls, USAP Community School, St Ignatius, St Johns Emerald Hill, Mabelreign Girls, St Johns Chikwaka and the hosts — Prince Edward, that put up a strong challenge to give the winners a run for their money.
Arundel Girls claimed the Best in Quiz accolade, while Chisipite Senior School took the Best inScenario and overall Best Trophies.
The winner will go for the national competitions to be held in Nyanga in the first week of August, where they will meet with winners from Matabeleland, Midlands and Manicaland regions.
St John Ambulance Zimbabwe National Brigade secretary, Tapiwa Gopo said quiz and scenario competitions were done to promote awareness of and enhance skills in first aid.
“Quiz and scenario competitions are part of our first aid in schools programme and the idea is to promote awareness of and enhance skills in first aid so that at every corner in the community there must be someone who knows first aid. The best way to achieve this is to have learners trained in first aid because learners are found in schools and communities,” he said.
St John Ambulance Zimbabwe aims to have more qualified first aiders to help people in all communities on a voluntary basis.
The centenary celebrations are going to be held across the country with Harare’s pencilled for 19 July while those of Bulawayo, Gweru and Mutare will be held on June 14, 15 and 21, respectively. For the main celebrations in Harare, the Lord Prior of the Order of St John from England, Professor Mark Compton AM GCStJ, will be present to officiate the occasion.
