Top Education Officials Warned They Will Get ‘Second Hand Honda Fit’ As Pension

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has warned school heads, District School Inspectors (DSIs) and Provincial Education Directors (PEDs) against harassing teachers, saying they should instead fight for better working conditions.

In a statement, PTUZ said it is the duty of senior officials in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to protect teachers from “a cannibalistic employer”. The PTUZ said:

It is the responsibility of school heads, DSIs and PEDs to protect teachers from a cannibalistic employer.

If you facilitate the harassment of teachers ndimi munochema mangwana (you will suffer for it).

You will get half a second hand Honda Fit as your pension. Think carefully.

This comes after Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education permanent secretary Tumisang Thabela said the ministry has invoked the principle of “no work no pay” for teachers who did not report for duty when the 2022 first term started on the 7th of February 2022 citing incapacitation.

On 8 February 2022, Thabela wrote to PEDs, DSIs and heads of primary and secondary schools instructing them to take urgent disciplinary action against the teachers.

On Thursday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Evelyn Ndlovu announced the suspension of striking teachers pending investigations.

Ndlovu said teachers who absented themselves from duty since the official opening of schools on 7 February 2022 had been suspended without pay with immediate effect, for a period of three months.
