Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE chairperson of the United Nations Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls, Laura Nyirinkindi, is expected in Zimbabwe today for a working visit to address issues of women’s rights at the invitation of government.
The visit ends on August 8.
She will be accompanied by vice-chair Claudia Flores and two staff members from the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Ilona Alexander and Jung Min Shin.
According to a Foreign Affairs and International Trade ministry statement, the visit seeks to assess Zimbabwe’s progress on how to handle discrimination against women and girls, their experiences so far and to identify areas that still require work.
“On the 10-day visit, Nyirinkindi will meet with senior government officials, including Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon Prof Dr A Murwira, as well as representatives from the Judiciary, police, Parliament, academia, civil society organisations and national human rights bodies,” the ministry said.
The delegation will also conduct field visits in Harare, Mutare, Masvingo and Bulawayo.
“The visit is part of Zimbabwe’s ongoing commitment to working closely with the United Nations Human Rights Council. The working group will present its findings in a report during the UN Human Rights Council’s 62nd session in June 2026,” the statement read.
This is the fourth visit organised by the Zimbabwean government for women’s rights, highlighting its active role in maintaining SDG 5, which states that achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls are not just the right things to do, they are essential for sustainable development.
