Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Harare City Council has announced plans to help its seven doctors to acquire vehicles to improve health service delivery.

This follows a meeting between the doctors and council’s acting finance director Godfrey Kusangaya.

Kusangaya confirmed the meeting.

“Yes, I had a meeting with the doctors in my office,” he said.

“Our doctors have been at the forefront, but because of lack of resources, we were not able to give them vehicles.

“We just hope that by end of year, they will get something.”

Kusangaya, who could not shed more light on the type of vehicles, directed questions to mayor Jacob Mafume.

Mafume indicated that council will not be purchasing the vehicles, but will facilitate a loan scheme, allowing doctors to buy vehicles and repay the loan over time.

“Our doctors should be able to move from one point to another,” Mafume told NewsDay.

“I am sure as council, we have a facility that enables our doctors to get loans for them to be able to buy vehicles.

“Our doctors and their supporting staff are doing a wonderful job. I have visited several clinics and seen that with the few resources (they have), they are doing well.”

The move comes amid ongoing public criticism of council for purchasing expensive vehicles for its executives despite city-wide poor service delivery.
