The Victoria Falls Covid-19 Task Force has intensified the community feeding programme in response to the continued increase in the number of households in need of food assistance in the resort town.
Over 4000 children are receiving meals daily under the Victoria Falls community feeding programme with over 50 000 meals having been served to date since the launch of the initiative.
Hwange District Medical Officer, Dr Fungai Mvura said there has been a surge in the number of households requiring food assistance.
“We are seeing that food security is becoming a major challenge and we have started a community feeding programme. We are also beginning to see adult malnutrition in some of our patients which is a very sad situation.”
In response to the food challenges, a local Victoria Falls-based entrepreneur Mr Paul Shambare has handed over food hampers to 100 vulnerable families.
“As a municipality, we are alive to the challenges the community has been facing and we are making a passionate plea to all well-wishers to come and assist the households facing food insecurity.”
The beneficiaries applauded the philanthropist for the gesture.
Two physically challenged children also received wheelchairs.
COVID-19 has affected the tourism capital with an estimated 80% of the border town’s residents left without income due to low activity.
