Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. By Sports Reporter – WARRIORS defender Teenage Hadebe has been honoured for his impressive debut season in the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS) after scooping two awards at his club Houston Dynamo during their end of season awards on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Zimbabwe international scooped the 2021 Defender of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards.

Hadebe joined the Dynamo on a free transfer from Yeni Malatyaspor in Turkey’s Süper Lig on June 28 and penned a three-year deal worth US$1,65 million.

The sure-footed defender, who is one of the highest earners at the club immediately made an instant impact at his new club after helping them keep a clean sheet in his debut, a 0-0 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 20.

Despite Houston Dynamo finishing bottom on the Western Conference standings to miss out on a place in the MLS Cup Playoffs, Hadebe led the team in clearances (73) and recoveries (97) until he suffered an injury in Houston’s 2-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC on October 16.

The centre-back finished with the third-highest mark in recoveries and with the fifth-most interceptions in 2021 with 31.

Hadebe is also in the running for another two awards after being nominated for two MLS awards for the Defender of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year.

The MLS said voting for the nominees, which is being done on MLSsoccer.com closed on November 8 while the list of finalists will be announced prior to the start of the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs at the weekend.

Hadebe is expected to play a key role for the Warriors at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals to be played in Cameroon in two months’ time.
