Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. WOMEN in Science, Technology and Innovation (WiSTI) are driving a steady rise in women’s participation in STEM fields through targeted mentorship, leadership development and knowledge sharing.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Speaking at the WiSTI conference in Harare, women praised the platform for opening opportunities that are helping more females to enter and excel in science-related careers.

Gwanda State University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Doreen Zandile Moyo, said the growing presence of women in STEM was reshaping academic and research institutions.

“We are witnessing a steady rise in female scientists and leaders,” she said.

“Their participation is reshaping institutions and bringing fresh perspectives that benefit communities and national development.”

The conference has emerged as a critical support system, providing role models, practical opportunities and networks that enable women to navigate the traditionally male-dominated fields.

Stakeholders said the WiSTI initiative demonstrated that supporting women in STEM was not merely about inclusion, but was fundamental to driving innovation, economic growth and sustainable development.

Elevate Trust director Sicelo Dube urged stakeholders to move beyond rhetoric, emphasising that inclusion should translate to tangible opportunities.

“‘Leaving no one behind’ is not just a slogan,” Dube said.

“It is about creating real opportunities for women and the girl child to see themselves as leaders, innovators and scientists.”

Dube encouraged women to assert themselves in STEM instead of waiting for recognition.

“Women should uplift themselves and not wait for recognition.

“Those who step forward confidently inspire others and help to transform workplaces, laboratories and institutions.”

Since its inception, WiSTI has focused on mentorship, leadership development and knowledge exchange, providing women with role models, practical opportunities and support systems, in turn enabling more women to enter STEM fields.

WiSTI is increasingly being recognised as a transformative force in the country’s scientific landscape, demonstrating that empowering women in STEM is critical to driving innovation, inclusive growth and sustainable national development.
