Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective three years in prison by the Harare Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of culpable homicide arising from negligent driving.
Tadiwa Muswere was initially given a five-year sentence, with two years suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve three years behind bars.
The court also cancelled his driver’s licence and banned him from driving for two years.
The court heard that on 4 July 2025, at around 1:45 pm, Muswere was travelling at excessive speed along Nemakonde Road, just after the Westgate roundabout in Harare. He lost control of his vehicle and collided with a Toyota Quantum carrying 10 passengers.
An eight-year-old passenger died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Muswere was charged with driving at excessive speed, failing to keep a proper lookout, and failing to maintain control of his vehicle.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the conviction, saying it serves as a reminder that negligent driving will not be tolerated by the criminal justice system.
