ZCTU backs Palestine, says govt must strongly condemn  Israeli attacks

Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has thrown full weight behind Palestinian citizens on the back of condemning the prolonged brutal attacks by Israeli forces.

Last week Palestine envoy in Zimbabwe, Dr Tamer Almassri revealed that the international community has been a huge letdown in the wake of attacks which has seen the embattled nation losing thousands of citizens.

He said the majority of those killed were children constituting 2 000 and another 700 being women.

A total of 35 hospitals have been attacked as tensions between the two nations escalated this month.

As of last week, Almassri reported that Israeli forces were targeting the Gaza strip where Palestine’s populace of 2, 2 million resides within just a 365 square meters area.

In a statement this week, the Zimbabwe, through the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary general, Japhet Moyo said it is time for the world to unite in ending the world’s prolonged wars.

“We express firm and unwavering solidarity with the long struggle of the Palestinian people in their quest for justice, peace statehood and call to an end to the ongoing barbaric violence engulfing Gaza.

“The people of Palestine have endured decades under occupation and during those years crimes against them have been committed by Israel including blockades that are meant to suffocate long-suffering people of Palestine,” he said.

Moyo condemned in strongest terms the current attacks on civilians, which have left thousands dead, many more injured and others kidnapped. What we are witnessing in Gaza is a humanitarian crisis that borders on genocide

He said the ZCTU unequivocally reaffirms its support for the struggles of the people of Palestine to end apartheid, and colonial occupation and for their right to be independent and call upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) to pursue war crime charges against the authorities in Israel.

“We also call upon the Government of Zimbabwe to send a strong message to the Israeli government to immediately stop its excesses and brutal murder of innocent civilians in Gaza.

“The Government of Israel must respect sovereign rights and freedom of the people of Palestine and embark on serious negotiations for a genuine settlement that accommodates both parties,” he said.

Moyo added that in the same vein, the working class of Zimbabwe and the working people of the world must support the struggle of thePalestinian people for Freedom.
