Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE and China celebrated 45 years of friendship with a Table Tennis Diplomatic Friendship Tournament at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Harare on Sunday.

The event, in its 5th year, was a testament to the enduring partnership and cultural exchange between the two nations.

It brought together players from the two countries in a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The tournament featured a unique format designed to strengthen the bond between the participants, with blended teams competing against each other.

The competition was fierce but friendly, with players showcasing their skills and teamwork.

In the team events, China captain Wang Liping’s blended team emerged victorious against Captain Vikram Singh’s team.

The ladies’ team event saw captain Su Zhang’s blended team defeat captain Ashley Dhlamini’s team.

In the singles matches, the spoils were shared. In the ladies’ category, China’s Su Zhang defeated Zimbabwe’s Dhlamini with a score of 4-1.

Zimbabwe’s Singh secured a decisive 4-1 victory against China’s Wang, levelling the score for the host nation.

The tournament successfully promoted friendship and mutual respect, with the blended teams fostering personal connections among the players.

The tournament, organised by the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) and the Chinese embassy in Zimbabwe, highlighted the role of sports in diplomacy and cultural exchange.

This collaborative effort has been instrumental in the development of table tennis in Zimbabwe, leading to significant initiatives like sponsorship for Zimbabwean players, coaches and administrators to attend training camps in China.

“This tournament is a testament to the enduring partnership between Zimbabwe and China. It not only celebrates our diplomatic ties, but also provides an excellent platform for cultural exchange,” ZTTU president Noah Ferenando said.

He also noted that such collaboration has already resulted in Zimbabwean athletes achieving multiple podium finishes in international competitions.

The success of the tournament underscores the importance of continued collaboration between Zimbabwe and China.

These events provide local players with vital exposure to international standards, which is crucial for the growth of the sport in the country.

The ongoing partnership is a key factor in nurturing young talent and improving the national team’s performance.

Open to the public free of charge, the tournament drew a strong turnout, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for both the sport and the international friendship it represents. United v Dynamos (Ascot).
