Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWEAN public health researcher, Tapfumanei Mashe, has been honoured with two prestigious awards at the 2025 Africa Health Excellence Awards in Durban, South Africa.

Mashe was honoured in the categories of Community Builder of the Year and Honorary Health Researcher of the Year.

The awards recognised his impactful work in tackling diseases like typhoid and cholera and his expertise in the “One Health” approach and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

In a congratulatory message, the Health and Child Care ministry said: “These accolades reflect the dedication of Zimbabwean professionals to regional health excellence.

“We celebrate Dr Mashe’s achievements and his contribution to a healthier Africa.”

Mashe’s collaborative approach has yielded significant local results, notably influencing the introduction of the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine in Zimbabwe in 2021.

“Through inter-ministerial coordination, we brought together different stakeholders to solve health issues,” he said.

Mashe highlighted a key paper he authored that was presented at the World Health Assembly and later at the UN General Assembly.

This work contributed directly to the Political Declaration on AMR, a landmark agreement that compels member States to implement interventions against drug-resistant microbes.

Mashe began his career as a volunteer scientist at the National Microbiology Reference Laboratory in the Health and Child Care ministry.

There, he pioneered the conceptualisation and co-ordination of Zimbabwe’s One Health and AMR programme.

He is currently the national co-ordinator for the AMR programme.
