Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. HARARE, Mar. 26 (NewsDay Live) — Zimbabwe’s aquaculture sector has received a boost with the launch of the country’s first tilapia value chain marketing strategy under the FISH4ACP programme.

In a statement, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Zimbabwe said the strategy marks a milestone in efforts to transform aquaculture into a competitive, commercially viable sector that supports food security and economic growth.

“The launch of the tilapia value chain marketing strategy under FISH4ACP sets a clear path for growth, sustainability and inclusive market opportunities in Zimbabwe’s aquaculture sector,” FAO said.

The strategy provides a coordinated framework to strengthen the value chain from production to market, with a focus on meaningful participation by smallholder farmers, women and youth.

FAO said aquaculture has strong potential to improve nutrition, raise household incomes and support rural livelihoods if backed by sound policies and efficient market systems.

The FISH4ACP initiative promotes sustainable fisheries and aquaculture while enhancing trade and investment opportunities in participating countries.

“The strategy will boost productivity, promote sustainable practices and improve access to profitable markets. Through FISH4ACP, we are working with Government and stakeholders to build a more resilient, competitive and inclusive fish farming industry,” FAO said.

The programme also aims to strengthen collaboration among Government, development partners, the private sector and local communities to ensure long-term sector viability.

FISH4ACP is a global aquatic value chain development programme implemented by FAO with support from international partners, targeting improved productivity, sustainability and economic returns in fisheries and aquaculture.
