Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE has been elected vice-president of the 26th UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November this year.
Zimbabwe will serve alongside Nigeria in the vice-presidency.
The country was selected during the ongoing 68th United Nations Tourism Regional Commission for Africa meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, which ends today.
Zimbabwe was also elected to the UNWTO Executive Council for the 2025-29 term, receiving the highest number of votes among nine African countries that contested.
Other elected countries include Kenya, Seychelles, Zambia, Angola, Morocco, South Africa, Mozambique and Tunisia.
“These victories are not just for Zimbabwe, they are for the entire southern African region,” Tourism minister Barbara Rwodzi said.
“They show confidence in our leadership, our innovation and our inclusive approach to tourism development.”
Zimbabwe will host the 3rd UNWTO Women in Tourism Regional Congress in 2026.
UNWTO Africa director Elcia Grandcourt said Zimbabwe’s selection was in recognition of the country’s efforts to position itself as a key player in global tourism.
