Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has announced the repatriation of nearly 100,000 of its citizens from South Africa, as authorities seek to address the significant increase in the number of returnees following unrest related to anti-immigrant violence.
The Minister of Information, Zimo Soda, confirmed the return of 99,418 individuals between May 28 and July 10, with more than 70% being women and children. He explained that the government, in collaboration with its development partners, has expanded the citizen repatriation program to meet the growing demand.
He noted that Malawian and Zambian citizens arriving at the Beitbridge border post are receiving assistance through their embassies, while arrangements are still being made for other foreign nationals in need of help.
He added, “More than 191,000 patients have been treated, and 870 children have undergone malnutrition screenings.” According to the National Statistics Agency of Zimbabwe, approximately one million Zimbabweans live in South Africa, although some independent organizations estimate the figure to be over two million.
