Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has seized US$80,000 in cash from an individual at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, moments before he boarded a flight to Tanzania.
Victor Magigwana, 32, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Jesse Kufa on Monday, charged under the Exchange Control Act for failing to declare the money. He was granted bail of US$300.
Under Zimbabwean regulations, travellers departing the country with more than US$2,000 are required to obtain prior approval from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi told the court that Magigwana had not been authorised to export the funds.
The court heard that on 14 March, detectives from the CID Commercial Crime Division in Harare received a tip-off that Magigwana intended to smuggle cash out of the country via the airport. He was subsequently placed under surveillance upon arrival.
After clearing security without declaring the cash, he was intercepted shortly before boarding a Tanzania Airlines flight.
ZIMRA officials seized the US$80,000, returning US$2,000 to the accused which is the maximum amount permitted for export without prior clearance.
