Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) has launched its first diaspora chapter in a bid to expand the fight for justice and equality beyond national borders.
In a statement on Monday, ZimRights said the launch followed months of groundwork and a series of strategic engagements with Zimbabweans living abroad.
The move signals a new era for ZimRights as the organisation embraces a global strategy to protect the rights of Zimbabweans wherever they are, meaning internationally or locally.
“This development marks a bold step in strengthening our collective resolve to defend the rights of Zimbabweans, not only at home but across the globe,” the rights watchdog said.
ZimRights recently launched the Rights Beyond Borders Manual at a Rights Beyond Borders Round Table convened in Pretoria, South Africa, early this year, in partnership with the Centre for Human Rights.
The organisation also launched the ZimRights Diaspora Chapter which constituted its interim committee thereafter at an event attended by multitudes of Zimbabweans in the diaspora.
The ZimRights Diaspora Chapter Interim Committee convened its inaugural elective meeting virtually on Zoom on July 30 this year and elected the leadership of the committee and the diaspora chapter.
The elective meeting was attended by members of the Diaspora Chapter Interim Committee, the ZimRights Elections Committee, the national chairperson and the secretariat to establish a formal leadership structure that aligns with the relevant resolutions of the annual general meeting.
According to the key outcomes of the meeting, the ZimRights elections committee represented by chairperson Martin Bongozozo and Mercy Kandela, administered the election for the interim committee leadership positions.
The meeting elected members of the interim committee with the mandate to serve for the next six months.
The members include Blessing Gorejena (chairperson), Abraham Mateta (vice), Alfred Mugani (treasurer), Lydia Chibwe (secretary). Liberty Matsive, Janet Munakamwe and Mabel Sithole were elected committee members.
The committee constitutes the 12th region of ZimRights with equal representation across all the organisation’s structures.
“The elected leadership affirmed its commitment to advancing the goals outlined in the Pretoria Rights Beyond Borders consultative meeting, focusing on grassroots activism and enhancing the voice of Zimbabweans in the diaspora,” ZimRights said.
“The elected leadership of the Diaspora Chapter Interim Committee will play a crucial role in amplifying the voices of Zimbabweans in the diaspora and advocating for human rights globally.”
