Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. DEVELOPMENT partners and lawmakers have pledged support to the country’s ambitious green economy initiative aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change.

This emerged during a national green economy dialogue attended by stakeholders from government, the private sector and civil society.

They reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable development models that prioritise clean energy, responsible resource use and climate resilience.

The meeting underscored Zimbabwe’s determination to align local production systems with global standards on environmental sustainability and the long-term wellbeing of future generations.

UN-Habitat project manager Alexander Chileshe hailed the initiative as a timely and strategic intervention.

“This initiative is coming at a critical time when Zimbabwe is focused on accelerating inclusive and environmentally-conscious development,” he said.

“We are actively working with local authorities to ensure this vision succeeds.”

Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate and Wildlife chairperson Sam Matema emphasised the role of Parliament in translating environmental ambitions into law.

“The input we have gathered here is invaluable. We intend to incorporate green economy aspirations into our legislative agenda,” he said.

“Once codified, these ideas will generate tangible benefits for Zimbabwe’s socio-economic growth.”

Central to the green economy strategy are priorities such as the adoption of clean and renewable energy, afforestation, efficient waste management and eco-conscious industrial policies.

This vision is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities.

Head of secretariat at the Green Building Council of Zimbabwe, Clara Mapokotera, stressed the importance of technical implementation and public education.

“Our long-term objective is sustainable economic growth that meets environmental standards,” she said.

“Industry and commerce must rise to this challenge.”

Zimbabwe’s green economy road-map targets a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, limits on resource depletion and a nationwide shift towards renewable energy. The transition to a green economy entails redefining economic models and policies to ensure environmental sustainability while fostering economic growth and social well-being.

It involves adopting practices that minimise carbon emissions, promote resource conservation, and encourage renewable energy use.
