Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) says it plans to build more toll plazas and expand the use of e-tags across the country to make travelling easier and reduce operating costs.
The ZINARA eTag is an electronic toll payment system that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
It allows drivers to pass through toll points without stopping, as payments are automatically deducted from a prepaid or linked account.
The system, which was launched in December 2024, is designed to make toll payments faster, safer and more convenient.
ZINARA is also rolling out a wider e-tolling system that lets motorists pay using e-tags or bank cards, with no need for cash or physical toll booths on highways.
These plans were revealed during a tour of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road rehabilitation project by senior Government officials, including Transport Ministry permanent secretary Joy Makumbe and ZINARA board chairperson George Manyaya.
Speaking to journalists at the Ntabazinduna Toll Plaza on Thursday, Manyaya said the e-tag system was now open to all motorists. He said:
“And also just to put a disclaimer that this lane is not for Government officials, as people think, even you can actually access this lane.
“It’s for everyone. We have opened this e-tag for everyone, and as we go, I think you have noticed that we had a tender for e-wallet.
“We are introducing a ZINARA e-wallet linked to Zimswitch, where you can transact in that wallet, where you can pay your licensing and also pay when passing your tollgate.”
Manyaya added that more than 30,000 vehicles belonging to both companies and individual motorists have so far been registered on the platforms nationwide.
