Africa-Press – Zimbabwe. THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has received a major boost for its incoming-generating projects after receiving a US$100 000 donation for the establishment of a popcorn making plant.
The donation from WestProp Holdings was part of the support the ZPCS received during the 2025 Commissioner-General’s Good Will Trust Fund Golf Fundraising Tournament.
In a statement, ZPCS commissioner-general Moses Chihobvu said the contributions would directly benefit orphans, children of deceased correctional officers and vulnerable community members, supporting their educational and welfare needs.
“Special recognition goes to WestProp Holdings, in partnership with Sharpe Family Philanthropic Trust, for their remarkable donation of US$100 000 towards establishing a popcorn factory.
“This investment will not only sustain the Good Will Trust Fund but also create opportunities for empowerment and self-sufficiency. The generosity, visionary support and commitment to social responsibility are highly appreciated.
“The partnership is a shining example of collaborative philanthropy and we are grateful for the trust in our mission. Together, we can create lasting impact and brighter futures for the less privileged.”
Speaking during the fundraiser recently, WestProp’s chief operating officer, Tatiana Ellis, said supporting the underprivileged was everyone’s responsibility.
“The fund was created out of serious concern for children and spouses of correctional officers left in dire straits after the death of a working parent or guardian.
“Some orphans of deceased officers were forced to drop out of school due to a lack of fees, uniforms and other necessities, leading to a life of social delinquency, with some boys and girls turning to drug abuse and resorting to begging and prostitution.
“These destructive activities, particularly drug and substance abuse, pose a national threat that can devastate the future of our youth. Therefore, the Commissioner-General’s Goodwill Trust Fund plays a vital role in mitigating the impact of these issues and safeguarding a generation.”
The trust fund assisted 450 disadvantaged children, of whom 269 have completed their respective education and academic levels.
It is also taking care of 181 beneficiaries — 110 males and 71 females — including six in tertiary institutions, 70 in secondary schools and five in primary schools.
“I am pleased to note that the Commissioner-General’s Goodwill Trust Fund is reaching beyond its initial scope to also support persons with disabilities in our communities.
“Disability is not inability and by donating wheelchairs and providing support to individuals within communities, the fund is helping to unlock potential and restore dignity through improved mobility.
“While the efforts are challenged by limited resources, the commitment to uplift the disadvantaged remains unwavering. Hence, the call for more support towards this noble cause.”
She said the US$100 000 commitment to the establishment of a popcorn factory was designed to generate ongoing support for the beneficiaries of the Commissioner-General’s Goodwill Trust Fund, with 100% of the profits dedicated to the noble cause.
